Hyderabad: The cardiology team at Sunshine Hospitals, Secunderabad have successfully conducted a minimally invasive heart procedure known as Trans catheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) and also implanted a pacemaker on a 77-year-old patient who was admitted to the hospital on December 26, 2021 with aortic valve stenosis, a medical condition in which the patient’s aortic valves get thickened and do not fully open, impacting the blood flow from the heart to other parts of the body.
Due to the patient’s age and multiple co-morbidities like diabetes, hypertension, obesity and obstructive sleep apnoea, it was decided that open heart surgery was not suitable and hence we planned TAVI, Dr. Sridhar Kasturi, Head, Cardiology and Senior Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Shailender Singh, Sunshine Hospitals, said.
The TAVI procedure and implanting of the pacemaker was taken-up on January 2. Both procedures were performed with local anesthesia, no ventricular support and without surgical indications, which helped in quick recovery
The TAVI procedure and implantation of pacemaker was performed by cardiologists including Dr. Sridhar Kasturi, Dr.Shailender Singh, Dr.Vijay Kumar Reddy, Dr.Naveen Kumar and Dr.Kiran Kumar.
