Hyderabad: EFLU hosts lecture on issues in language assessment

Hyderabad: The Department of English as Second Language (ESL) Studies at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad, organised an insightful talk on Language Assessment here on Monday.

Rama Mathew, retired Professor from the Department of Education, University of Delhi, delivered a lecture on the topic ‘Some continuing issues in Language Assessment’. The event aimed to enlighten participants on crucial issues in language assessment, a fundamental component of language education.


In her lecture, an ELT consultant Prof. Mathew underscored the importance of assessment in language education, highlighting the growing significance of multilingual pedagogy and multilingual assessment due to the National Education Policy 2020. She discussed issues such as assessment anxiety and the need for enhanced assessment literacy among teachers.

Prof. Mathew emphasized that assessments should be communicative, learner-centered, and contextually relevant. She also pointed out that reliable, valid, and ethical assessment practices are essential.

The ELT consultant suggested that EFLU has the potential to become a proficiency test centre and stressed the mandatory testing of the speaking component. She noted the strong impact of end-of-term exams on classroom activities and urged that speaking skills be evaluated by both classroom teachers and examination boards.

Prof. Kishore Kumar, Dean of the School of English Language Education, Dr. M Udaya, coordinator of the talk, students, researchers, teachers, and media professionals took part in the event.
