Hyderabad: The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) has recently served show cause notices on 11 students for holding a pro-Palestine rally and expressing their solidarity with Gaza on October 7.
Notices were served on Students Union president Vikas Porika, general secretary Deena Elsa George, vice president Aardra and joint secretary Noora Maisoon, along with seven other student leaders from various organisations, on the charge that they participated in the unlawful gathering and used banners and posters.
A few students, as per the university notice, made a derogatory comment against the government and an insulting reference to the administration and police. While some students replied to the notice, a few sought some time to respond citing examinations.
Meanwhile, condemning the show cause notices, the Students Union said the notices carried baseless allegations such as inciting violence and hatred on campus, making derogatory remarks against the government and insulting the university.
“While these allegations were fabricated against students who have been standing in solidarity with the people of Palestine, the university ignored the planned violence of ABVP members who raised derogatory slogans, tore up pro-Palestine posters and physically intimidated participants of the rally,” the union said.
The administration’s selective approach raises serious concerns about impartiality and the suppression of legitimate student voices on campus, it said.
“We strongly condemn any such attempts to suppress the voices of students on our campus and call upon the student community to collectively resist the selective targeting by the administration,” it added.
