Hyderabad: Unexpected, unseasonal rains were recorded in parts of the city since Thursday evening, with Friday too witnessing abrupt showers in several areas.

The rains, which added to the night chill, began around evening on Thursday in some areas in the form of light to moderate rainfall and turned into heavy rain in some parts around midnight. After a break in the morning on Friday, when the skies remained overcast, the city saw light rain post noon. Following the cloudy weather and rains, day temperatures too dipped in many places.

The India Meteorological Department’s forecast has indicated that Hyderabad could receive rains that were likely to continue till late evening hours. The conditions are likely to return to normal with dry weather from Saturday, officials said, adding that Yousufguda had received the highest rainfall of 7.5 mm, followed by Tolichowki (6.3 mm), Banjara Hills (5.5) and Balanagar (5.3 mm).
IMD officials attributed the sudden rains to the transition period from cold to heat. As winter is almost over, transition of weather is taking place and under its influence, the city was experiencing cloudy skies and light rain, officials said.

K Nagaratna, Head, Meteorological Centre, Hyderabad said the weather usually changed in the last week of February, when winter bids adieu. “During this period, rains would occur under the impact of western disturbances over the State,” she said, adding that temperatures would now slowly increase and make the days warmer.

Usually, in February, rains do not occur as the weather conditions would be normal. In February last year, Hyderabad recorded a monthly total rainfall of 4.8 mm. interestingly, during 2015 – 2018, not even one mm of rainfall was reported in February in Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, the Telangana State Development Planning Society weather forecast said light to moderate rainfall could be expected in some places up to Saturday, after which dry weather was expected for the next two days in Greater Hyderabad region.

Minimum temperatures are expected to be in the range of 15 degrees to 17 degrees in the next three days, while the maximum temperatures could hover in the range of 30 degrees to 32 degrees.
