Hyderabad: The Department of Transfusion Medicine and Haematology, ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Sanathnagar, has successfully conducted allogeneic bone marrow transplant on a 20-year-old woman suffering from aplastic anaemia, a rare medical condition in which the body stops producing enough red blood cells.
With this procedure, the Sanathnagar ESIC teaching hospital has become the first, among other ESIC institutions in the country, to have successfully conducted the complex procedure, Medical Superintendent Dr K K Pal, said.
Allogenic bone marrow transplant is a procedure where patients receive healthy stem cells i.e. blood-forming cells to replace their own stem cells. In such transplants, the healthy stem cells come from the bone marrow of a donor.
The teams drawn from haematology, transfusion medicine and central research lab of ESIC Hospital, Sanathnagar, performed the emergency bone marrow transplant on the young patient, who has returned to near full activity after recovering from the underlying condition.
Dr Pal and Dean Prof Srinivas said in future the Sanathnagar ESIC teaching hospital aims to establish a full-fledged BMT facility along with transplantation immunology (HLA typing and CART cells) and Stem cell (Mesenchymal and Induced pluripotency stem cells) labs to give one point solution to all ESIC medical college institution across the country. They also congratulated the team for taking up the complex procedure.
