Hyderabad: Hyderabad-based Medha Servo Drives, an indigenous manufacturer of railway products, has secured a major tender worth Rs 2,211 crore for supply of 44 Vande Bharat train sets to the Indian Railways.

The contract is for design, development, manufacture, supply, integration, testing and commissioning of IGBT-based three-phase propulsion, control and other equipment for the 44 rakes with 16 cars coaches each.

Vande Bharat Express is the first self-propelled engineless train of the Indian Railways that can run at a maximum permissible speed of 160 kmph. Currently, the Railways is operating two world-class Vande Bharat trains between New Delhi-Varanasi and New Delhi-Katra. These new train sets will reduce journey time by 20 per cent.

IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao, congratulating the company, said in a tweet: “Delighted that these Vande Bharat Trains will be made by Medha Servo Drives from Hyderabad at their Kondakal facility.”

The tender saw three bidders, with Medha Servo Drives emerging as the winner. The company also met the condition of minimum local content of 75 per cent of the total value and in fact, assured 90% of domestic content under ‘Make in India’. The procurement includes five years of a comprehensive annual maintenance contract with the supplier.

The train sets will be manufactured at three production units of the Railways — 24 rakes at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, 10 at the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, and 10 at the Modern Coach Factory in Rae Bareli. Subsequently, the first two prototype rakes will be delivered in 20 months, and thereafter on successful commissioning, the firm will deliver six rakes a quarter.

The coaches of these trains will be of chair car type for day travel and equipped with many modern features, including automatic plug doors with retractable footsteps, side destination boards, automatic intercommunication door, speakers, charging sockets, closed-circuit television cameras, emergency talkback units with networking system, LED lights, GPS antenna and mini pantry, among others.
