Hyderabad: Hyderabad has added another feather to its flourishing cap after it has been declared as a ‘Water Plus’ city. After adorning the open defecation free (ODF++) tag, Hyderabad is now the first city in Telangana to receive the Water Plus certificate. This means that the city is treating its waste water to a satisfactory level before releasing it into the environment.
Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) – Urban has given the ‘Water Plus’ certificate to Hyderabad.
Congratulating the people of Hyderabad, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao said the government will continue its efforts. “Congratulations to the citizens of #Hyderabad on our city getting the coveted ‘Water Plus’ status of Swachh Bharat Mission from Govt of India. Hyderabad is already recognised as ODF++ city. We will continue our endeavour to make it cleaner & greener,” he tweeted.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) said that the Water Plus certificate was a collaborative effort of the GHMC, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).
“As on date 772 MLD of waste water is treated every day through 25 sewage treatment plants (STPs) under HMWSSB jurisdiction and three STPs maintained by HMDA. The treated water is used for growing avenue plantations, developing greenery in parks, construction of flyovers and footpaths. The water is also used in public toilets and to meet the agricultural needs in downstream areas,” a release said.
According to the third party inspection report, GHMC performed well in all the nine aspects on which the urban local bodies across the country were assessed. Safe discharge of sewage or septage (faecal sludge) and sufficient capacity of desludging vehicles and jetting machines are the top parameters among the nine in which the GHMC performed well.
