Hyderabad: Hotel businessman dies after alleged suicide attempt linked to online betting losses
A 53-year-old hotel businessman from Ghatkesar died while undergoing treatment after an alleged suicide attempt. Family members told police he had suffered substantial losses through online betting, causing severe financial stress. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
Hyderabad: A 53-year-old hotel businessman from Aushapur in Ghatkesar succumbed while undergoing treatment after allegedly attempting suicide amid financial distress linked to online betting losses.
The victim identified as V Shekar, ran a hotel business along with his wife Sridevi. Family members reportedly told police that he had recently developed a habit of participating in online betting activities and suffered significant financial losses, leading to mounting stress.
According to the police, on June 14, Shekar allegedly returned home after consuming alcohol and got into an argument with his wife. During the altercation, he reportedly attempted to end his life by hanging himself with a saree, but his daughter intervened and stopped him.
Police said that later, when no one was around, he locked himself inside a room and allegedly hanged himself from a ceiling fan using a saree. Family members forcibly opened the door and rushed him to Gandhi Hospital for treatment.
Despite medical efforts, Shekar died while undergoing treatment on Thursday.
Based on a complaint lodged by his wife, Ghatkesar police booked a case and are investigating.
