Hyderabad: A recent discussion in Reddit will open the eyes of many women job-seekers in Hyderabad. A person posted in a Hyderabad-based group that a Human Resources (HR) from a well-known corporate company in Gachibowli allegedly requested sexual favours from his female friend in exchange for a job. The victim apparently exchanged emails and calls with this person who was claiming to be working at a reputed organisation.
“An HR asked for sex in exchange for a job (to my (F)riend). Can we complain against him? What else we can do? Will the police approach the parents? If yes, then it would affect her freedom and her parents might restrict her to do a job (sic),” reads the post.
The person added, “A guy from this sub helped me search his name and mobile number in the company’s directory. He said there are no details of him. Also, the mail which he sent was a Google domain but the company doesn’t use the Google domain it seems. I think the best choice would be complaining to SHE teams.”
Although it is not clear whether the woman actually received the email from a genuine company or if she was speaking to an imposter/scammer, officials warn young women to be cautious when applying for jobs and giving out their personal details.
An HR from another private company on anonymity shared, “It is a punishable offense to ask for sexual advances in exchange for a job. Sexual harassment cases at corporate companies are dealt with seriousness. The offender will not only lose his job but if a complaint is filed, legal action will be initiated as per provisions of law. As the victim’s name and identity will be kept confidential, we request women who are being harassed at/by any organisation to file a complaint without hesitation.”
SHE Teams can be contacted by dialing 100 or on WhatsApp at +91 94906 16555.
The law
The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013 (also referred to as the “POSH Act”) came into existence in 2013. It has its foundations in the Vishaka Guidelines and establishes a mechanism for dealing with sexual harassment complaints in the workplace.
The Act is the right step to ensure a safe working environment for women as it requires all companies (with more than 10 employees) to constitute an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) in the prescribed manner and to address the workplace sexual harassment complaints from women in a time-bound and confidential manner.
The Act defines sexual harassment as:
a) Physical contact and advances
b) Demand or request for sexual favours
c) Making sexually colored remarks
d) Showing pornography
e) Any other unwelcome physical, verbal, or non-verbal conduct of sexual nature.
