Hyderabad: Residents of Deendayal Nagar are expected to get relief from recurring flooding after Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) teams began desilting a 3-km stormwater drain stretch to improve floodwater flow in Fatehnagar-Balanagar.
HYDRAA’s Disaster Response Force and Monsoon Emergency Teams undertook the work on Thursday following a complaint from Balanagar industrial area business owners at the agency’s public grievance forum, a press release said.
The owners alleged that encroachments were obstructing floodwater flow despite other buildings adhering to drain boundaries. They sought removal of the encroachments and accumulated silt.
Teams removed 6 to 7 feet of silt and decades-old garbage from the drain. HYDRAA also directed officials to identify and immediately remove encroachments along it.
Officials said the drain should be 25 metres wide at its origin and 40 metres wide in Fatehnagar, but had narrowed significantly despite its dimensions being specified in Fatehnagar and Balanagar industrial estate layout.
The drain runs from Bharat Nagar bridge through Deendayal Culvert, Fatehnagar, Shobha Colony, Gautham Nagar, IG Puram, Begumpet and Prakash Nagar before entering Hussain Sagar Lake. Fox Sagar drain joins Kukatpally drain near Gautham Nagar.
HYDRAA commissioner A V Ranganath reviewed the desilting work.
