Hyderabad: Deep earth excavation works for flyovers, underpasses, and the city’s second-longest elevated corridor are presently in progress in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) and Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) areas, raising concerns about hardships for commuters during the ensuing monsoon.

The ongoing works have already affected traffic movement across key stretches, and commuters are likely to experience more delays and congestion as the monsoon sets in. The works could impact daily travel with road users anticipating delays and disruptions when it starts to rain. All three civic bodies are presently engaged with massive infrastructure works in progress at around KBR Park in GHMC, near IIIT Junction in CMC, and at Uppal Junction in MMC.

Uppal Elevated corridor between Uppal Junction and Narapally:

The 6.4-kilometre Uppal Elevated corridor between Uppal Junction and Narapally is set to become the second-longest elevated corridor in the State after the 11.6-km PVNR Expressway. The corridor starts at Uppal Junction and terminates near the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) in Narapally.

Present status: Excavation works to build five pillars at the Uppal skywalk junction have begun, with a target of completing the project by December 2026.

Traffic Diversions: For the works, the Uppal-Warangal stretch of the Uppal Ring Road has been completely shut, and all light vehicles from Hyderabad heading towards Warangal at the Survey of India/GSI Junction are diverted. Heavy vehicles and trucks are prohibited from entering the Uppal crossroads zone, as well as the inner-city diversion roads.

KBR Park: Seven steel flyovers and underpasses

Around KBR National Park, seven flyovers and seven underpasses are being taken up under the H-CITI project, estimated at Rs 1,090 crore. Earth excavation works are underway at the KBR main entrance, Indo-American Cancer Hospital, Maharaja Agrasen Junction, Film Nagar, and Jubilee Hills check post, while pillar works at the LV Prasad Eye Institute are progressing at a brisk pace.

Present status: The seven steel flyovers and underpasses are expected to be completed by December 2028.

Traffic diversions: In the first week of April, traffic police held a one-way trial run for traffic diversion at KBR Junction. In February, ahead of earth excavation works commencing, a traffic advisory was issued for KBR Junction and surrounding areas, including KBR Park entrance, Jubilee Check Post, Indo-American Hospital, and Maharaja Agrasen Island/ Junction.

IIIT Junction: 3 flyovers and an underpass:

At IIIT Junction, three flyovers and an underpass are proposed, including a 4-lane bi-directional flyover (level-1) from ISB Road to DLF Road, a 3-lane unidirectional flyover (level-2) from DLF Road to Gachibowli Stadium, a 3-lane unidirectional flyover from ISB Road to Gachibowli (Indira Nagar), and a 6-lane bi-directional underpass from Gachibowli (Indira Nagar) to Gachibowli Stadium.

Present status: Earth excavation works for flyovers and underpass commenced in February 2026 and are progressing at a brisk pace. The works, taken up with an estimated cost of Rs 459 crore, are aimed to be completed by December 2028.

Traffic diversions: Traffic diversions commenced from April onwards, with congestion anticipated in and around IIIT Junction. Traffic has been diverted at Gachibowli junction, IIIT Junction, Gachibowli Stadium, Financial District, Gopanpally Thanda, Wipro Junction, HCU Bus Depot, and adjoining areas.
