Hyderabad: On World Heritage Day 2021, i.e., April 18, Hyderabad saw the launch of a unique initiative – Bharatiya Dharohar Evam Sanskriti, by the eminent museologist and art historian Dr J Kedareswari.

With an intent to increase awareness on heritage and culture and to network like-minded individuals for the same, Dr Kedareswari, who previously served as Additional Commissioner (Heritage) at GHMC and as the Curator at Salarjung Museum, took up the initiative.

“There is a lot of tangible and intangible heritage that makes up for the fabric of Indian culture. Our heritage is our ancestral treasure and that is why we used the word “Dharohar” in the name. This initiative is to connect, collect, curate networks and also perform advisory activities on storage, handling and maintenance of heritage structures and artefacts,” she explains.

According to her, the society has 67 members at present, from all over the country and from all walks of life, with the common goal of working towards preserving and spreading Indian culture and heritage.

The first event, conducted on April 18 by the society, was a panel discussion on Heritage and Museums in the new normal days. “The pandemic closed down museums globally. Footfall decreased drastically in museums all over the world and in a scenario like this, it is important to adapt to the new normal,” she says.

Attended by eminent historians, archeologists, academicians, museologists, the panel discussion revolved around utilising technology to promote heritage and heritage structures. “We plan to conduct more talks, book reading sessions, etc in the future, with the next one being on May 10, which is the anniversary of the Meerut uprising in 1857,” she adds.
