Hyderabad: What if you could spend a day wandering through Japan without leaving Hyderabad? From sipping matcha and trying traditional Japanese sweets to watching cosplay, martial arts and dance performances, the Hyderabad Japan Festival is bringing together some of the country’s most recognisable cultural experiences under one roof.
Taking place on October 11 from 9 am to 8 pm at Cyber Gardens, Hitech City, the festival will bring together traditional Japanese arts, food, language, technology and pop culture. And the best part? Entry is free.
The day will begin with a glimpse into Japan’s quieter artistic traditions. Visitors can watch demonstrations of Ningyo, the intricate art of Japanese dollmaking, and Sumi-e, where nature and emotion are expressed through minimal ink-and-brush strokes. There will also be opportunities to explore Ikebana, Japan’s art of mindful flower arrangement, and learn how bonsai artists shape miniature trees through careful pruning and styling.
If crafts are your thing, the pottery showcase will feature Japanese ceramic traditions, while stalls selling Japanese-inspired jewellery, accessories and handcrafted trinkets will offer plenty to browse.
Then comes the food and hospitality. The festival will introduce visitors to wagashi, delicate Japanese sweets created around seasonal flavours and forms. A traditional Sado, or Japanese tea ceremony, will also offer an introduction to matcha and the Japanese concept of omotenashi, centred on thoughtful hospitality.
For those who prefer their Japan with a little more energy, the festival has anime, cosplay and an anime quiz on the agenda. Expect colourful costumes and performances as fans bring their favourite characters to life.
There is also a strong India-Japan innovation connect, with an Innovation Hackathon exhibition and award ceremony, along with a robotics demonstration by Mrs Himashree.
Rounding off the day will be martial arts, a puppet show, Japanese dance, music recitals and a Japanese speech contest, making this more than just a cultural showcase. It is a full-day celebration of Japan, from its centuries-old traditions to its modern pop culture.
