Hyderabad: Five more persons including former Andhra Pradesh minister and her husband were detained by the Hyderabad City Police for questioning in connection with the alleged kidnap of former hockey player Praveen Rao and two of his relatives last night from Bowenpally.

The former minister and her husband were shifted to the Begumpet Police Station for questioning, officials said. Eight persons were detained last night itself in connection with the incident.

On Tuesday night, at least eight persons in three cars came to Rao’s house in Bowenpally and introduced themselves as Income Tax officials. On the pretext of conducting a search at the houses, the gang collected various documents, laptops and other articles from the house.

“The gang then segregated the family members and except Praveen, Naveen and Sunil, confined the rest in a room while the other three were asked to sit in the hall. While leaving the premises, they kidnapped Praveen, Naveen and Sunil,” the Bowenpally police said.

The family members informed other relatives who grew suspicious about the IT raid and around midnight, approached the Bowenpally police who alerted senior officials. Teams of the Commissioner’s Task Force immediately swung into action and caught the gang at Ramgopalpet and rescued the three persons. It is learned that land related issues were behind the kidnapping.

The suspects have told the police that they were forced to sign some documents. Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar is likely to hold a press conference later in the day and give further details on the case.
