Hyderabad: Family members of a 55-year-old timber and plywood businessman, who was declared brain dead, have decided to donate the organs of the deceased.

On February 10, Limbani Aravind Patel, a resident of Adarshnagar, Nagole was hit by a two-wheeler while he was walking at Badangapet. He sustained grievous head injuries and was rushed to Yashoda Hospitals, Malakpet where he received treatment in the intensive care unit for three days. With his health condition showing no improvement, the team of neuro-physicians on February 12 declared him brain dead due to poly-trauma including brain injury.

The counsellors from the State-run organ donation initiative Jeevandan and Yashoda Hospital counselled the family members of Aravind Patel, including his wife Savita and two sons, who agreed to donate his organs. According to Jeevandan officials, this was for the first time that a family from their community came forward to donate organs.

The surgeons retrieved four organs including two kidneys, a liver and two corneas and sent them to different transplant centres based on the organ donation guidelines of
Jeevandan.
