Hyderabad: Orthopaedic surgeons at Star Hospitals have launched a new knee replacement procedure Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) that promises just an overnight stay for patients after the surgery.
The ERAS procedure ensures patients do not have to stay in the ICU after surgery and can be shifted to a room within three hours after the surgery. The patient is made to walk on the same day of the surgery and can be discharged after an overnight stay, Chief Joint Replacement Surgeon, Star Hospitals, Dr Neelam V Ramana Reddy said.
Reduced stay not only makes the surgery affordable but also reduce chances of Covid infections, since the patient is not required to stay for a long time at the hospital.
“ERAS is an evidence-based approach that includes use of advanced anaesthetic techniques, including application of pain management and nerve blocks coupled by an advanced minimally invasive surgical procedure with minimal blood loss,” he said.
It also ensures that there is very little discomfort and pain during recovery and compared to traditional method where the patient requires four to five nights in the hospital, here the recovery is considerably faster, Dr Reddy added.
