Hyderabad: Kompally has come a long way from being a small village on the outskirts of Hyderabad. From being known only for the dhabas along the national highways, the northern corridor of Hyderabad is set for a major infrastructure thrust. With the rapid growth of real estate in the area, Kompally has attracted several brands in the field of hospitality, health, education, fashion, culinary and many more to open outlets in the area.
In the last few years, several brands including Pantaloons, Fab India, Max, Big Bazaar and Westside have opened their stores in the area. Interestingly, the biggest Decathlon store in the city is also located at Kompally. Moreover, one doesn’t even have to go beyond Suchitra circle to shop for gold jewellery now. Many jewellery brands, such as Tanishq and Malabar Gold have big outlets in the area. From beauty parlours to gyms and late-night drive-ins Kompally has it all.
Speaking about the rapid development of the area, Ranjana Devi, a secondary teacher at a local school, Siva Sivani Public School, says, “When I moved to Kompally in 2005, Siva Sivani was the only school in the area. There was only one private hospital here and we mostly had to travel towards Secunderabad if we had to do any kind of shopping or to even watch a movie. Till about a few years back people recognised Kompally with only dhabas or Dhola-ri-Dhani. But with time — especially in the last five years — the place has completely transformed. As the population grew in this area, many well-renowned schools and hospitals have opened their branches here. There are so many pharmacies, food outlets and high-end clothing stores that have come up in the area that it is almost unrecognisable.”
With so many brands making a beeline to open a store in Kompally, and several residential complexes coming up, the residents hope that the Metro is the next thing to arrive in the area. “Kompally was ignored for a long time in terms of development compared to other parts of the city. Thankfully, the area has now suddenly bloomed. We can see so many malls, standalone branded showrooms, eateries, hangouts, schools and lately big-ticket housing projects coming up at Kompally. It is the next big thing in Hyderabad real estate. Hopefully, metro rail should arrive soon as well,” says Jhankar Khemka, Senior Manager, Marketing Communications, Notion Press.
While most residents are very happy with the development, there are others who miss the good ol’ days. Chandan Singh, a Kompally resident, says, “I used to like the farms around. It was a very quiet and green place. Komaplly has the problems of any major residential place now — the pollution has increased due to a large number of vehicles around and the constant construction. The feeling of living on the outskirts has vanquished.”
