Hyderabad: The Rajendranagar police on Friday arrested Mohd Sajid on charges of harassing his wife and also on charges of abetment of suicide.

Sajid, who worked for a tent house, lived with his wife Shabana Begum alias Sabeena Begum (35), and five children at MM Pahadi in Rajendranagar. Police said Sajid, who was addicted to alcohol, often went home drunk and picked up fights with Sabeena. He harassed her mentally and physically.

After one such heated argument on Wednesday, Sabeena died, allegedly by suicide, after consuming an unknown poisonous substance in front of her husband and children. Though Sajid could have saved her, he let her die, Sabeena’s family has alleged.

When their children tried to rescue her, Sajid stopped them, threatened and locked them in a room, they said, adding that it were the neighbours who tried to rescue her and alerted the police.
