Hyderabad: A special court for child abuse cases in Nampally on Friday sentenced a man to three years of rigorous imprisonment for molesting and attempting to rape a minor girl five years ago in SR Nagar. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on him.

The convicted person was Sheik Riyaz (35), an auto-rickshaw driver from Sanjay Nagar in Yousufguda.

In January 2017, Riyaz trespassed into the house of the 16-year-old girl in the absence of her parents and molested and tried to rape her. She resisted his attempts and escaped.

Based on her complaint, the SR Nagar police booked a case and subsequently arrested Riyaz.

City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar on Saturday appreciated the investigation officer and team for securing the conviction and felicitated them. The Commissioner also appreciated the investigation officer and team of Mangalhat police for their efforts in securing a sentence of 20 of rigorous imprisonment to Sukrat Singh Uikey alias Birju, from Dhoolpet for raping a five-year-old girl in 2020.
