Hyderabad: Crowds milling around, people bargaining with the street vendors, street hawkers selling everything from decorated diyas to fancy lightings to fashion accessories and even home decor items, and stand-alone shops inviting customers in – bazaars in the city are pulsating with activity as people step out for Diwali shopping.
Several shopping hubs in the city saw swarms of people buying garments, flowers and puja items. Having witnessed a dry festive season last year, the shopkeepers are happy to see the large crowd on the street.
“Last year, very few people came out for shopping. So the business suffered a lot. However this year people started shopping for Diwali early. We had a huge rush of customers looking for festive wear. Many aren’t shying away from spending a little extra given that the last Diwali was not-so-festive,” shares a shopkeeper at General Bazaar.
Several firework stores near the area also saw brisk sales of crackers. Thanks to the festival, the small street food corners near the shopping areas have also come back to life.
After finishing their shopping people were seen making a beeline for the street-side vendors selling everything from chaat, to sandwiches and even ice creams – another festive flavour people have been craving for. However, with the shopping fervour picking up, some people were seen roaming around without masks and little social distancing was seen to be followed by the customers.
