Hyderabad: The Medicover Hospitals, Hitec City, on Thursday announced completion of 102 kidney transplants in a span of a year despite the difficulties of successive waves of Covid pandemic.
“We have done 102 successful kidney transplants in the span of the last one year. Back in the year 2000, we used to do only 15 to 20 transplants per year across all the hospitals, but now the number of transplants has gone up to 70 to 100 in a year. At this rate, India needs 10 lakh transplants per year, but current there are only 12,000 being taken-up,” Dr. Kamal Kiran, Director, Department of Nephrology, Medicover Hospitals.
Senior urologist and kidney transplant surgeon Dr KVR Prasad said “living on haemodialysis is tough for patients and entire family. A suitable kidney donor can give a new lease of productive life to a person. On majority of occasions, a suitable donor is available within family”.
To spread awareness on transplantation, its advantages and latest scientific developments, the hospital is also conducting kidney day celebrations, which falls on March 10. Senior urologists including Dr. A V Ravi Kumar, Dr K V R Prasad and Dr Koushik Sharma will take part.
