Hyderabad: An 80-meter portion of the 23-kilometer long solar-powered cycling track was dismantled by the municipal officials on Tuesday. Authorities have maintained that only a small part of the solar cycling track was removed to provide space for traffic movement at Nanakramguda and the rest of track will continue to remain unchanged.

The sudden dismantling of the much-loved landmark of Hyderabad, especially for fitness enthusiasts, attracted a lot of criticism from general public on social media. A large number of commuters, who travel on a daily basis through Nanakramguda, however, welcomed the decision and argued that easing traffic was far more important than an unused cycle track.

There were also individuals, on social media, who were not convinced by the sudden unannounced decision to remove the portion of the cycling track to make way for normal traffic.

Senior Cyberabad traffic officials clarified that only a part of the cycling track is being removed in order to accommodate a ramp that will benefit traffic from Khajaguda. The traffic authorities said that a small down ramp after Nanakramguda will help commuters save time and benefit traffic management.

The 23-kilometre cycle track along the ORR was officially inaugurated during the BRS government tenure in the early 2023, marking a significant milestone for the city. Known as the ‘Healthway Cycling Track’, this unique facility boasts a global design and is divided into two distinct stretches. The first section covers a distance of 8.5 kilometers, stretching from TGPA to Nanakramguda. The second stretch, spanning 14.5 kilometres, extends from Narsingi to Kollur.
