Hyderabad: Traffic jams on the Uppal-LB Nagar road, which have been a repeated story every day for several years, could soon become history by this July with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) building a six-lane bi-directional flyover at Nagole at an estimated cost of Rs 67.97 crore.

The traffic coming from Uppal and moving towards LB Nagar via Nagole and traffic going towards Uppal from LB Nagar via Nagole will flow much more smoothly once the facility is opened for public. The flyover is being built under the State government’s ambitious Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) and is 990 metres long and 24 metres wide.

As on date, 50 per cent of the flyover works have been completed and all the 23 foundations and piers have been laid. The works under progress include erection of girders and laying of deck slabs.

According to GHMC records, the benefits of the project include a smooth commute on Uppal-LB Nagar stretch and substantial savings in terms of travelling time. As per the detailed project report (DPR) for the flyover, the facility, apart from increasing commute speed, enhances safety and level of service for the road users in addition to reducing pollution.

The GHMC officials said that over the years, LB Nagar has turned into a busy locality with many dwelling units, office spaces and commercial establishments mushrooming locality resulting in increased traffic density.

In additional to that, LB Nagar is also one of the major entry and exit points for people commuting to and fro to Vijayawada with the LB Nagar Junction and connecting roads witnessing heavy traffic.

To address these traffic issues in LB Nagar and its vicinity, 14 SRDP projects at an estimated cost of Rs.448 crore were proposed. Among them, Chintalakunta Checkpost junction underpass, LB Nagar Right Hand Side (RHS) underpass are the facilities that have already been made available to people in addition to the existing Kamineni Left Hand Side (LHS) Flyover, LB Nagar LHS Flyover, Kamineni RHS flyover and Bairamalguda RHS flyover.
