Hyderabad: There has been no major breakthrough even about two weeks after the gruesome murder of Tanuja Ranjan (55), wife of retired IPS officer Vinay Ranjan Ray.

However, the Hyderabad Police seem to have uncovered the involvement of a larger Nepali gang in the case and suspect that several accused have escaped to Nepal.

The sensational murder took place on May 8, at the couple’s bungalow in Prashasan Nagar in Jubilee Hills, with the prime accused, domestic worker Kalpana from Nepal, allegedly conspiring with members of a gang to kill Tanuja before fleeing with cash and gold jewelry.

During the investigation until now, Jubilee Hills police have identified the role of at least seven gang members. One suspect, Sunil Pariyar, was reportedly detained in Mumbai and questioned by investigators, leading to the recovery of about one tola of stolen gold. However, police have not confirmed this development yet.

Meanwhile, the police special teams had traced the movements of Kalpana and two of her associates from Nampally railway station to Kazipet soon after the murder on the day. The group is believed to have later split and travelled towards Mumbai and Bhopal before moving through Uttar Pradesh.

Officials now believe that three suspects may have already illegally crossed into Nepal through the international border.

Special police teams are continuing the manhunt for the remaining absconding suspects.
