Hyderabad: NIMS resident doctors to continue OPD, elective services boycott on Friday
NIMS resident doctors will continue boycotting OPD and elective services on Friday over security concerns after an on-duty junior doctor was allegedly threatened and abused. The RDA said it wants written assurance that trained security forces will be deployed within a week.
Hyderabad: With their demands for improved security facilities yet to be met, the members of the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) announced on Thursday that they will continue to boycott outpatient (OPD) and elective services on Friday.
The resident doctors boycotted their duties from Thursday morning following an incident where an on-duty junior doctor was allegedly verbally abused and threatened by patient attendants. The emergency/casualty services, however, will continue to function normally.
Following demands and protests, the NIMS hospital administration registered First Information Reports (FIRs) regarding two separate incidents, one on August 31 and another on Wednesday, September 16, wherein on-duty senior residents were threatened and abused by patient attendants.
Despite the FIR from NIMS management, the resident doctors are not satisfied with the measures and decided to continue their protests on Friday.
The RDA said that the NIMS administration proposed to form a committee to discuss the issue of deploying the Special Protection Force or Rapid Action Team. “We are not satisfied with the response from hospital management. We are pressing for a strict, time-bound guarantee that trained security forces will be deployed within a week. We want such assurances in writing from the authorities. There is a need for institutional accountability and NIMS management should take ownership whenever hospital doctors are targeted while performing official duties,” senior residents of NIMS said.
