New Year feast turns tragic; one dead, 11 hospitalised in Hyderabad
A man died and 11 others were hospitalised after falling ill during a New Year celebration at Jagathgirigutta in Hyderabad. Police suspect food poisoning or adulterated liquor and have sent food and liquor samples for laboratory analysis
Hyderabad: A man died while 11 other persons were hospitalised due to suspected food poisoning at Jagathgirigutta in the city on Wednesday.
According to police, a group of 17 persons, part of a local association, gathered at Bhavaninagar community hall for New Year celebrations. During the day, they arranged fish and chicken and prepared biryani.
“In the evening, they consumed the biryani and liquor. Soon after, one of them, Pandu (53), started vomiting and due to health complications died in the house,” said Jagathgirigutta police.
The remaining 16 members suffered health issues and were rushed to hospitals. Of them, 11 persons are currently undergoing treatment at two private hospitals.
On information, the Jagathgirigutta police registered a case and seized food samples, groceries and liquor from the community hall. The items will be sent to laboratory for analysis. The police are investigating if the members fell ill after consuming biryani or adulterated liquor.
