Hyderabad: The second phase of works on the crucial Falaknuma Road over Bridge is all set to begin.

According to officials, the redesigning works of the old Falaknuma RoB, an important connecting facility for several areas in the far south of the city, were completed and the bridge was also thrown open to the public. Now, authorities are awaiting the shifting of water pipelines by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board.

“There is a water pipeline to be shifted from the place. Once that is done, we will start the works on constructing a parallel RoB at Falaknuma. We are hoping that the Water Board shifts the pipeline by the end of December,” a senior GHMC official said.

The works on the RoB are being taken up at a cost of Rs 37 crore. In the first phase, the GHMC took up redesigning of the existing bridge and constructed a wide culvert to allow free flow of water from the nala flowing downstream from Bandlaguda Suraram Cheruvu. Due to the narrow nala passing under the old bridge, there was major flooding in Al Jubail colony last year, with the area remaining inundated for over a week.

In the next phase, a parallel bridge will be laid to the existing bridge. “The railways will complete the works of the Rail over Bridge over the tracks and the remaining portion will be completed by the GHMC,” the official said, adding, the land acquisition process was already under way and a few properties were acquired.

The GHMC will be starting the work most probably by January. On the acquired space, a slip road for free movement of the traffic proceeding towards the Al Jubail colony will be laid.

The RoB will improve connectivity between the old city and its extension areas on the far south of the city like Shaheennagar, Kanchanbagh, Pahadishareef, Bandlaguda and Maheshwaram. There is huge traffic flow on the bridge owing to the fast growth in the far southern areas of the city. The narrow bridge early led to frequent traffic slowdowns, resulting in immense inconvenience for motorists proceeding from the old city towards the far south areas or southeastern areas of the city.
