Hyderabad physician revives 74-year-old critical patient on Indigo flight

With no time to lose, Dr. Preethi Reddy quickly assessed the passenger’s condition. With his pulse feeble and BP very low, the doctor performed CPR. Remarkably, the passenger responded within few minutes.

Hyderabad: A general physician from Hyderabad successfully managed to revive a 74-year-old critically ill passenger mid-air on an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Hyderabad on Sunday.

At an altitude of 39,000 feet, Dr. Preethi Reddy, who is also Managing Director, Mallareddy Vishwa Vidhyapeet, provided emergency treatment to the male passenger, who was travelling alone and began experiencing sudden drowsiness, fluid drooling from his mouth, passed urine in clothes and was not responding to commands.


With no time to lose, Dr. Preethi Reddy quickly assessed the passenger’s condition. With his pulse feeble and BP very low, the doctor performed CPR. Remarkably, the passenger responded within few minutes.

After regaining consciousness, the elderly passenger shared his past medical history of suffering from hypertension and had undergone Cardiac Angioplasty. Dr. Preethi administered necessary medications using the onboard medical kit.

The team also planned and called the command control room at Hyderabad Airport to be ready with wheel chair, ambulance emergency doctor who came for the support the moment flight landed. All co-passengers supported and coordinated with the flight crew.

Thanks to her prompt intervention and teamwork with the crew, the passenger stabilized before the aircraft landed. Upon landing, he was immediately transferred to a medical facility for further care.

The cabin crew and fellow passengers appreciated Dr. Preethi Reddy’s timely and life-saving actions.

IndiGo Airlines has also acknowledged her heroic efforts, which helped avert a potential tragedy in the sky.
