Hyderabad: As part of ‘Operation Kavach’, Hyderabad police conducted a massive enforcement drive across the city to crack down on vehicle number plate tampering and fake registrations on Thursday night.

The special operation, conducted between 10 pm and midnight, resulted in the seizure of 2,149 vehicles found violating number plate regulations. Police teams inspected 12,098 vehicles, including two-wheelers, cars and autorickshaws, and identified 1,406 vehicles with irregular number plates, 1,132 without number plates and 69 using fake registrations.

Officials seized 2,046 two-wheelers, 52 four-wheelers and 51 autorickshaws during the drive.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar personally visited several checkpoints across the city, inspected vehicles and interacted with motorists. He warned that deliberate number plate tampering would not be treated as a mere traffic violation and that offenders could face cheating and forgery charges.

Police said manipulated or fake number plates are often used by criminals to evade detection and can also lead to innocent vehicle owners receiving wrongful e-challans or being linked to criminal cases.
