Hyderabad: Surgeons at Hyderabad-based Preeti Urology and Kidney Hospital on Wednesday announced successful procedure on a one-year-old baby from Hyderabad, suffering from congenital bilateral kidney swelling a condition that, if left untreated, could severely impact kidney function. The surgery was performed on both sides of the kidney simultaneously using indigenously developed advanced SSI Mantra Robotic system.
Led by Dr. V. Chandra Mohan, senior urologist and MD, Preeti Urology and Kidney Hospital, the team employed just four small keyholes to access kidneys of the infant and perform the dual surgery.
Traditional laparoscopic procedures require multiple incisions and manually maneuvering surgical tools for hours. However, robotic surgery reduced the potential for repeated anesthesia exposure and the need for multiple hospital admissions, minimizing risks and expenses for the patient’s family, Dr. Chandra Mohan said. The baby was discharged within 24 hours.
