Hyderabad: The Government Railway Police (GRP), Secunderabad, along with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), arrested a 19-year-old man while he was transporting counterfeit Indian currency notes with face value of Rs.60 lakh from Jaipur to Mumbai via Hyderabad in Mumbai LTT Express.
According to police, the suspect, Shivratan Mahiya, a resident of Bikaner district in Rajasthan, became acquainted with Om Prakash (25), also from Bikaner district, a few months ago.
Prakash allegedly offered him Rs.20, 000 to transport counterfeit currency to Mumbai. On October 28, he handed over a backpack containing the fake notes at Jaipur railway station and instructed him to take it first to Kacheguda and subsequently to Mumbai.
DSP Government Railway Police, Secunderabad, S.N. Jaweed said Mahiya reached Kacheguda on Friday evening and stayed overnight at a lodge. He proceeded to Secunderabad the following morning. After the Konark Express was cancelled due to floods, Prakash instructed him to board the Mumbai LTT Express.
At around 1.30 pm on Saturday, GRP and RPF personnel intercepted him and recovered the counterfeit currency. During questioning, he allegedly confessed that he was transporting the notes for delivery to an associate in Mumbai.
Efforts were under way to apprehend Om Prakash, who is absconding, and identify others involved in the racket, the official added.
