Hyderabad: Barely a day after the death of Andhra Pradesh medico Dr K Priyanka following a horrific hit-and-run in Rajahmundry, a similar incident allegedly involving suspected drunk driving has shocked the city. In the latest, a retired Army jawan was killed on the spot and three others were injured after a speeding Mahindra SUV travelling on the wrong side of the road rammed into them at Hydershakote in Narsingi on Monday.

The accident occurred near SMP School when a speeding Mahindra SUV, allegedly being driven on the wrong side of the road in a rash and negligent manner, struck pedestrians.
The victim was identified as Ravinder (55), a resident of Hydershakote and retired Army personnel.

According to his family, Ravinder had served in the Army for nearly 20 years before retiring. He was subsequently working at the Artillery Centre, Golconda, and was returning home from work when the accident occurred at around 6 am. Ravinder had put his children in an Army school at Hydershakote and was staying with his family in a rented house nearby.

According to relatives, he was only a few minutes away from reaching home when the speeding SUV struck him.

“The SUV allegedly came from the wrong side of the road and hit Ravinder with considerable force. The impact reportedly threw him into the air before he fell onto the road. He suffered multiple grievous injuries and died at the spot,” said Naveen, a relative.

Police said after hitting Ravinder, the SUV allegedly continued and rammed into four pedestrians who were walking along the road. Several of them suffered serious injuries, with one reportedly being in critical condition. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The SUV was reportedly occupied by five youths at the time of the accident. After the crash, the occupants allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled from the scene.

The Narsingi police took up the investigation and identified the SUV. Police reportedly found alcohol bottles inside the vehicle, raising suspicion that the occupants may have been consuming alcohol before the accident.

Police have identified and detained the suspected driver and are questioning him to establish who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The vehicle was reportedly identified as belonging to Babu Goud, a resident of the Shamshabad Airport area. Police are examining CCTV camera footage from the area to reconstruct the sequence of events, determine the speed and direction of the SUV and identify all those who were travelling in it.

Ravinder’s death has left his family in shock, particularly as he was reportedly returning from work and was just minutes away from reaching home when the tragedy occurred.
The Narsingi police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
