Hyderabad: Retired government employee duped of Rs 38.73 lakh in Facebook sextortion scam
A 70-year-old retired government employee was conned out of ₹38.73 lakh after falling victim to a sextortion scam on Facebook. Cyber fraudsters posed as a woman, demanded money for medical treatment, and later threatened him with fake POCSO charges.
Hyderabad: A retired government employee lost Rs. 38.73 lakh to the cyber fraudsters who conned him into paying money on pretext of medical treatment and then after threatening with a POCSO case.
According to the police, the man, aged 70 years, received a friend request on Facebook from a person claiming to be a woman and he accepted it. The person then told the man that they hail from a poor family and asked him to pay Rs. 10,000 for arranging a wifi connection for continuing the online conversations. After a few days, the fraudsters collected over Rs. 10 lakh from him on the pretext of medical treatment.
A few weeks later, the fraudsters threatened the elderly man on pretext of chatting in inappropriate manner with a minor girl and introducing themselves as policemen and sub inspectors collected several lakhs from him. After paying Rs. 38.73 lakh to the fraudsters, the man approached the police and made a complaint.
On a complaint, the Cybercrime police registered a case and are investigating.
