Hyderabad: Heavy to moderate spells of rain on Monday afternoon and evening in several parts of Hyderabad threw traffic completely out of gear, leaving tired commuters stranded in massive traffic jams that moved at a snail’s pace.

With Monday evening’s commute severely disrupted and more rain anticipated during the night, Hyderabad police urged people to remain indoors and those in offices to complete their work at the earliest and head home.

Rainfall data from TSDPS indicated that heavy downpours lashed various parts of the city and its outskirts. The Kapra region recorded the highest rainfall of 69.5 mm at the GHMC Office circle, followed by Maheshnagar Ward Office (40.3 mm), Uppal (40.0 mm), and Malkajgiri.

Central and northern areas, including Begumpet, Paradise, Patny, Bowenpally, Rasulpura, Tarnaka, Habsiguda, Khairatabad, and Himayatnagar, also witnessed intense spells that quickly overwhelmed drainage systems and inundated roads. Major thoroughfares and arterial junctions were submerged under sheets of water, leading to severe commuter chaos. Moderate to heavy rain was also reported in Tellapur, BHEL, Chandanagar, KPHB, and nearby areas.

The heavy downpour forced motorists to seek shelter under Metro stations and flyovers, notably congregating near the Khairatabad Metro Station, slowing traffic along the Ayodhya Junction-VV Statue corridor. Similar situations also prevailed at Paradise, the CTC Flyover, and Begumpet, creating traffic jams. Heavy congestion was reported across the Begumpet, Paradise, and Secunderabad corridors, with vehicles crawling through knee-deep water.

In response to the deteriorating weather, the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) deployed their Engineering, Disaster Response, and Monsoon teams to vulnerable waterlogging spots.

CMC Commissioner G Srijana said field inspection teams were actively working on the ground to clear stormwater flow obstructions and minimise public inconvenience.

Citizens have been strongly advised to avoid low-lying waterlogged areas, exercise caution while driving, and report any civic issues or waterlogging emergencies through the My CURE App for prompt assistance.
