Hyderabad sees dip in in dengue, malaria cases this season

Since January this year, only one malaria case and 39 dengue cases were reported in the city

Hyderabad: A multi-pronged approach adopted by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) clubbed with intensive anti-larval operations, fogging and awareness campaigns over the months has helped in bringing down the number of malaria and dengue cases in the city.

Since January this year, only one malaria case and 39 dengue cases were reported in the city. This is against more than 50 dengue cases that were reported during the same period i.e., January – May last year.


The innovative ‘Every Sunday 10 Minutes at 10 am’ programme is also seen as having helped in bringing down the number of vector borne diseases. Other measures taken up by the authorities to control mosquito menace such as identification of disease hot spots, removal of water hyacinth and Musi rejuvenation.

Ahead of National Dengue Eradication Day observed in India on May 16, GHMC appealed to people to continue the ‘Every Sunday 10 Minutes at 10 am’ programme which is aimed at encouraging community participation in containing the vector borne diseases. As a part of the programme citizens are involved in clearing water stagnation points in homes.

Anti Larval Operations:

* Anti-larval operations with 642 teams in domestic, peri-domestic mosquito breeding sources
* 1 lakh houses covered every day
* On average 3,000 to 3,500 houses being identified positive for mosquitoe breeding.
* Source Reduction i.e. checking of overhead tanks, sumps, pit-taps and other water storage containers like drums, tins, pots
* 18 Anti Larval Operation (ALO) teams with 54 workers doing antilarval operations in River Musi from Attapur to Chaderghat bridge
*Daily fogging is done for control of adult mosquitoes with 302 portable and 63 vehicle mounted fogging machines
* 150 localities covered each day.

Drones Activity: Conducting drone activities zone wise, circle wise and localities wise in all identified lakes.

Removal of Water Hyacinth: Tenders completed for 39 lakes

Introduction of IoT Devices: GHMC to use IT enabled devices and modern technologies to improve efficiency of fogging machines
