Hyderabad: Cyber fraudsters cheated a senior citizen from Chilkalguda to the tune of Rs 2.3 lakh in the name of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB).
According to the police, scammers posing as water board officials called Prabhakar, a retired employee, claiming that his consumer CAN number must be updated immediately or water supply to his house would be discontinued.
They then convinced him to install an APK file sent to his phone. Soon after installing the malicious app, the fraudsters accessed his bank details and siphoned off Rs 2.3 lakh from his account in multiple transactions.
Based on his complaint, the Chilkalguda police booked a case and traced the transferred amount to multiple other accounts.
