Hyderabad: City-based SLG Hospitals on Sunday organised ‘Sakhi’ meet, an initiative to provide basic training to women so that they can perform self-assessment to evaluate health conditions like breast cancer, anaemia, menstrual problems, and other common health complications, before they reach out to a doctor.

“Women are best advised to conduct self-assessment of certain ailments and ascertain the condition, before seeking medical help. Conditions like breast cancer, anaemia and problems associated with menstruation, and few others can be done at home, and we recommend women to do the same,” said Dr. Suvarna Rai, Consultant Gynecologist and Obstetrician, SLG Hospitals.

The doctors stressed on the importance of maintaining hygienic practices. “Many girls fall victims to cervical cancer because they are not aware of the importance of personal hygiene. There are simple tests like ‘Pap test’ which will help detect the problem, and timely vaccination will help contain the problem efficiently,” said Dr Swarna Kumari, Radiation Oncologist from the hospital.

As a part of the Sakhi initiative, expert doctors from various disciplines will visit residential societies in Hyderabad to conduct awareness sessions for women, share knowledge and techniques on self-assessment.
