Hyderabad: The Gandhi Global Family’s Gandhi Gyan Prathistan felicitated former international footballers of Hyderabad Syed Nayeemuddin, Shabbir Ali and Victor Amalraj along with a few other sports personalities at the Bhaskar auditorium in the Birla Planetarium.
The felicitation function was organised to mark the National Sports Day, held on the birthday of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
During his playing days, Nayeemuddin had represented the Indian team and won a bronze medal at the Asian Games in 1970. Later he became a successful coach. He has coached many clubs and the Bangladesh National team as well as the Indian national team. He is the only person to win both the Arjuna award and the Dronacharya award in football.
Shabbir Ali was rated as the best player in India during the 1970s and 1980s. Arguably the finest striker of his time, Shabbir was a prolific goal scorer both at the national and international level. He rose to fame at a very early age when he captained India as it won the Asian Youth championships jointly with Iran in 1974. He is a recipient of the Dhyan Chand award for Lifetime achievement.
Midfielder Amal Raj led India and was a popular player in the Calcutta league. He played for East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting during his playing days.
