Hyderabad: The Gachibowli police on Tuesday arrested Abhishek Deverapalli in connection with the drunk driving case resulting in the death of D Ashritha (23), an MTech student here on Sunday. The police also arrested the owner and manager of Snort Pub in Kondapur.
While Abhiskek was booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, others were booked for abetment to culpable homicide, officials said. Abhishek’s friend Sai Prakash alias Satya Prakash is absconding.
According to the police, investigation revealed that Abhishek drove the vehicle under the influence of alcohol and at high speed despite knowing it could cause accidents. This amounted to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, police said.
“Sai Prakash allowed Abhishek to drive and abetted drunk driving. Both had consumed alcohol together and then started to drive the car,” said G Suresh, Gachibowli, adding that it amounted to abetment to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Officials said though due to Bonalu, a notification was issued for the closure of bars and pubs in Cyberabad on Sunday and Monday, Snort Pub management defied the order and kept the business open.
“They kept the pub open and had allowed the suspects to consume alcohol. It was their responsibility to arrange transportation for the customers who got themselves drunk, but they did not follow the police order. Thereby, they too abetted culpable homicide not amounting to murder,” the inspector said. The trio was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
Police said drunken driving has been a major cause of road accidents and fatalities and hence stringent legal action was being initiated against violators.
“Those who consume alcohol together and allow one of them to drive under the influence of alcohol and travel together will also be prosecuted for abetment of the crime as per the facts of case,” said an official.
On Sunday night, Abhishek, a third year student from a business school along with Ashritha, and other friends had met for dinner. After partying at the pub they were returning home, when Abhishek who was driving the car lost control of the steering wheel and crashed into the boulders on the right side of the road.
