Hyderabad: With the aim of making Hyderabad a Honking Free City, the Hyderabad Traffic Police will take out awareness programmes to curb noise pollution caused by honking.
The awareness programmes will be conducted at all TSRTC depots, taxi stands, auto-rickshaw stands and higher educational institutions including engineering colleges and PG colleges.
The initiative is being taken by the Traffic Police following complaints of health-related issues caused due to use of multi-toned horns and air horns. Different stakeholders will be part of the programmes.
A meeting of the officials of the Traffic Police, Regional Transport Authority, TSRTC and Telangana State Pollution Control Board was held on Monday to discuss the strategy to be adopted to achieve the goal. Travel agencies, automobile mechanics and car decor dealers also participated in the meeting.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Hyderabad AV Ranganath said it was resolved to hold awareness programmes about health issues resulting due to honking of vehicles and use of air horns.
“We aim to make Hyderabad a Honking Free City and all necessary steps to curb the menace of honking will be taken,” said Ranganath.
The Traffic Police are also equipped with sound meters to check decibel levels and use it often to check pollution levels in prohibited areas.
