Hyderabad: To reduce injuries and fatalities on the city roads, Hyderabad Traffic Police are strictly enforcing the helmet rule for two-wheeler riders. It applies not only to the driver but also to the pillion riders. If not, a challan will be issued to two-wheeler owners.

The rationale behind strictly enforcing this is that pillion riders too die in case of accidents, and the enforcement of the rule will help in saving lives. According to the MV Act 1989, a penalty for riding without a helmet is Rs 100. Now, if the pillion rider is helmetless then an e-challan will be issued for the same amount.

Besides, since most people continue to ignore Covid-19 safety protocols and ride without wearing a mask, the department is strictly implementing the face mask rule like helmet rule. Surveillance cameras and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques are being used to track down the ‘mask on’ rule violators.

Those caught violating the rules are being booked under Section 51(b) of the Disaster Management Act, which was amended in view of the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic, apart from imposing a Rs 1,000 fine. The same applies to pillion riders.
