Hyderabad: Two persons were killed and another critically injured in a firecracker blast at Kandikal Gate area in Chatrinaka late on Thursday night. The incident occurred when they were trying to light a firecracker dump, police said.
The victims were identified as Jagannadh Mallik (26) and Bishnu Mahato (31), while the injured person was Virender Kumar (30), all natives of West Bengal.
According to the police, the trio along with others migrant workers, were working as idol makers at a shed near Kandikal Gate for a long time. As part of Diwali celebrations, they were bursting firecrackers on Thursday night around 11pm when the mishap occurred.
In order to trigger a good explosion, they dug up a pit in the ground and filled it with high intensity firecrackers, stones and debris.
“They first lit the dump, but as it was not visibly burning, they doubted if it had caught fire. To check what happened, they went closer to the pit. It was then that the firecrackers suddenly exploded,” police said, adding that two died on the spot with the severity of the explosion being such that the faces and body parts of the victims had multiple perforating injuries, serious fractures with the faces being disfigured too.
The other co-workers who heard the explosion initially panicked but soon realised what happened and rushed to the rescue of the victims. Virender, who is critically injured, was shifted to the Osmania General Hospital where his condition was stated to be serious. The Chatrinaka police booked a case and started investigation.
