Hyderabad viral fever cases rise amid monsoon; doctors warn against antibiotic misuse

Doctors at Kamineni Hospitals have reported a rise in viral fevers, influenza-like illnesses and acute febrile conditions in Hyderabad amid monsoon humidity. They advised early testing for persistent fever, strict mosquito control, respiratory hygiene and avoiding indiscriminate antibiotic use.

Hyderabad: Amid ongoing monsoon conditions and elevated humidity levels, doctors at Kamineni Hospitals are reporting a notable increase in outpatient consultations across its LB Nagar and King Koti facilities for viral fevers, influenza-like illnesses (ILI), and acute febrile conditions.

In response to this seasonal surge, hospital’s senior physicians and infectious disease specialists have urged the public to avoid indiscriminate antibiotic use and seek early laboratory diagnosis for fevers extending beyond 72-hours.

The hospital doctors have advised people in Hyderabad to follow a synchronized two-track prevention strategy by maintaining strict vector control by clearing stagnant water receptacles weekly to prevent mosquito breeding, alongside disciplined respiratory hygiene, regular handwashing, and mask usage in crowded indoor environments.

At present, patients with seasonal viral fevers, H1N1 flu, and early-stage dengue are having almost identical symptoms in the first 48-hours. A large number of patients with dengue-like illness are testing negative for vector-borne pathogens and are actually suffering from acute viral infections. If a fever persists for the past three days, do not assume it will resolve on its own. Get evaluated with same-day blood tests and refrain entirely from over-the-counter self-medication, senior doctors from the hospital including Dr M Swamy, Dr Hari Kishan and Dr. Srikrishna Raghavendra Boddu said.
