Hyderabad: As October is celebrated as breast cancer awareness month, We for Women — a society for women empowerment — organised a 2k Walk on Necklace Road on Sunday.
Emphasising that breast cancer was the second most common cancer among women, Dr Pratibha Lakshmi founder of We for Women, said, “One in every eight women get breast cancer. However, about 96 per cent of lives can be saved with early detection. In 2020, a total of 1,78,361 new breast cancer cases and 90,408 deaths from the disease were reported.”
Dr Sravanthi, a specialist in Gynaecological Malignancies, said We for Women was creating awareness and training for self breast examination in colleges for an early detection of breast cancer.
Dr M S S Keerthi, Surgical Oncologist, said, “Morbidity and mortality in cancer patients is higher in our country, compared to the west. This is because the stage of cancer at the time of presentation is third or fourth. Earlier the detection better the prognosis.”
Over 200 people took part in the awareness walk, including several cancer specialists and around 50 students from the Government Degree College, Begumpet.
