Hyderabad weather: September heat pushes ‘feels like’ temperature to 40°C

Hyderabad experienced hot and humid conditions on Wednesday, with Gachibowli recording 37.1°C, the highest among several city locations. High moisture made conditions feel hotter, while IMD forecasts a drop in temperatures from Thursday along with thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Hyderabad: It is the middle of September, but Hyderabad’s weather on Wednesday felt more like a brutal afternoon in May. People found themselves sweating through sultry conditions that pushed maximum temperatures close to 36 degrees Celsius, but it ‘felt like’ 40 degrees Celsius in several neighbourhoods.

The temperature data from Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) recorded peak temperatures climbing steadily across various parts of the city by 4 pm on Wednesday.

The Hitech City corridor experienced hot conditions, with Gachibowli area recording a maximum temperature of 37.1 degrees Celsius followed by Kapra at 36.7 degrees Celsius and Balanagar at 36.5 degrees Celsius.

Maximum temperatures (in degrees Celsius) in other areas, according to the TSDPS data, were Chandanagar/Serilingampally (36.4), Uppal (36.2), and Miyapur (36.1).

Meanwhile, more moderate readings were logged in Khairatabad (35), Ameerpet (34.1), and the University of Hyderabad (UoH) campus area, which recorded a relatively lower 33.1.

Weather experts and public health experts have explained that heavy moisture in the air makes it difficult for sweat to evaporate and cool the body down. As a result, the outdoor air feels so sticky and suffocating, tricking the body into feeling much hotter than the actual maximum temperatures are.

While the maximum temperatures were relatively high on Wednesday, from Thursday, according to IMD Hyderabad forecast, temperatures are expected to fall. The Hyderabad weather department has issued a warning for thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds in all districts of Telangana for the next 5 to 6 days from Thursday.
