Hyderabad: A 28-year-old private employee was allegedly cheated of Rs 34.22 lakh by a woman who befriended him through a matrimonial website and promised to marry him.
The complainant, a resident of T Anjaiah Nagar in Moosapet, alleged that the woman, who introduced herself as Keerthi, had contacted him on July 11 last year.
Police said that after gaining his trust, she persuaded him to invest in companies promising high returns. Initially, he invested Rs 50,000 and received a profit of Rs 8,100. “Encouraged by another apparent profit of Rs 80,000 on an investment of Rs 1 lakh, he subsequently invested a total of Rs 34.22 lakh in instalments,” officials said.
Though profits were reflected in his account, the complainant could not withdraw the money. Realising that he had been cheated, he approached the Cybercrime police and lodged a complaint on Thursday.
The case is being investigated.
