Hyderabad: The Malkajgiri CCS police and the Jawaharnagar police on Friday nabbed a woman and her mother on charges of burgling her in-law’s house in Yapral earlier this week. Police recovered cash, gold and silver ornaments, all together worth Rs 22.1 lakh from them.

The arrested persons were V Sony (25), a resident of Kindi Basti in Yapral and her mother N Leelavathi (43), from Employees Colony in Yapral in Jawaharnagar. Police said Sony was married to Vishwanath, who runs a toddy business and they were staying in a joint family in Yapral along with Vishwanath’s parents and siblings.

At the time of Sony’s marriage, Leelavathi had mortgaged their land for Rs 30 lakh and later slipped into a severe financial crisis. According to the police, the way out Leelavathi saw was to loot the house of Sony’s in-laws and she shared her plan with Sony, who accepted it.

On Monday evening, when Sony’s in-laws went to Kandikal Gate to attend a wedding, Sony reached her in-laws’ house on her scooter. She switched off the main power switch and entered the house using a spare key.

“She stole cash, gold and silver from the almirah,” Rachakonda Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat said, adding that while leaving, Sony used a boulder and damaged another almirah to make it appear that the offence was committed by professional thieves.

Based on a complaint from her father-in-law V Venkata Swamy, the Jawaharnagar police booked a case and with the help of CCTV footage, Sony was identified and arrested. The woman and daughter were produced before court and remanded in judicial custody.
