Hyderabad: A private employee from Old Alwal was cheated of Rs 6.3 lakh by a woman who approached him through a matrimonial website allegedly by promising marriage and high returns through stock trading.

According to the complaint, an accountant working with a private firm, was contacted on the matrimony website by a woman introducing herself as Nandita Reddy.

After exchanging WhatsApp numbers, the two chatted regularly for nearly three months. The woman claimed she was originally from Vijayawada and was currently working in the UK with a stock trading company.

She gradually gained the complainant’s trust by speaking to his family members through video calls and convincing him that investing in stock trading would secure their future after marriage.

Further, claiming to be an expert trader, she persuaded him to download a trading application allegedly linked to her company from the Google Play Store.

Believing her intentions were genuine, the victim initially invested Rs 50,000. As the app showed apparent profits, he continued investing in instalments, eventually transferring a total of Rs 6.35 lakh. The app later displayed profits of nearly Rs 20 lakh.

However, when he attempted to withdraw the amount, he was told that a 30 per cent tax had to be paid separately for withdrawal.

When he requested that the tax be deducted from the profits and the remaining amount transferred to his account, the woman stopped responding and switched off her phone.

Realising he had been cheated, the victim lodged a complaint with the Malkajgiri Cybercrime police, who booked a case and are investigating.
