Hyderabad: A woman from Secunderabad who wanted to sell her old sofa for Rs.6,500 on a prominent e-commerce platform lost Rs. 1.96 lakh to fraudsters here on Wednesday.

According to the police, the victim posted an advertisement on the popular buying and selling portal and uploaded pictures of the sofa, priced at Rs.6,500. One person contacted her, evincing interest to buy the sofa at the price she had quoted.

After a few minutes, he sent her a QR code and asked her to scan it for receiving the payment. After doing it, she found that an amount of Rs.6,500 was deducted from her account.

“She informed the same to the so-called buyer, who on pretext of returning the cash sent the QR codes eight times and made her scan those again. Eventually, she lost Rs. 1.96 lakh,” a Hyderabad Cybercrime police official said.

Based on a complaint by the victim on Thursday, the police have registered a case and are investigating.
