Hyderabad: Demanding action against the principal over alleged irregularities and harassment, women students of Telangana Social Welfare Residential Degree College for Women, Nagarkurnool, staged a massive protest in Shadnagar on Sunday.
Protesters alleged that the principal was taking away provisions from the hostel mess to her home and harassing students for questioning her conduct. They also alleged that the principal was charging Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 for issuing a transfer certificate and Rs 10,000 from married women students to appear for the examinations.
Although the college staff tried to persuade students not to stage the protest, they gathered at the town square and raised slogans, demanding the principal’s suspension. They also demanded the suspension of teachers who extended support to the principal.
With traffic going haywire, the police personnel arrived and started detaining several students. During this process, a woman constable in civil dress reportedly hit one of the protesters. This led to heated exchanges with the police personnel and some students reportedly pulled the constable by her hair.
